It's late on Monday evening as I sit in the hotel room in a Seattle suburb. This morning the EC3 Design team had the opportunity to visit the The Evergreen School. We arrived on a cozy campus, with beautiful cedar trees and a family of friendly crows, to be given laser cut name tags and sugary breakfast food. Friendly and energetic teachers started our day with a QR code scavenger hunt that required getting to know the other participants in the workshop. Once finished we discovered batteries and lights which we added to our name tags.
After the warm welcome we were given the opportunity to tour the BIG Lab. Build, Innovate, Grow! I wandered like a distracted child around the space touching the tools, and taking pictures of all the shiny things which attracted me. Bins upon bins of labeled tools and materials to build and construct objects of creation. Excellent signs peppered the space. Tools everywhere including: a soldering station, sewing machines, electronics and robotics, a green screen and sound booth, curiously engineered tables, and bright red computers. They had drills, and angle cutters, a laser cutter, and numerous 3d printers. My favorite tool thus far has been a cardboard cutter- it's the simple things in life!
I used Adobe illustrator to create a cardboard sign on the Laser cutter, and played with Tinkercad for awhile. I sifted through the books on the teachers shelf, and gathered suggestions and thoughts from seasoned educators. One day down, and I already have a brain brimming with thoughts.
